Translate in the Townships is a three-day master class for premium market translators. It is the successor to the popular “Translate in the Catskills” event held in Maplecrest, New York, in 2009 and 2011.
The event has two tracks: one for translators who work into French, and one for translators who work into English. The English track may also be suitable for translators who have an understanding of French, but work from some other language into English. Sessions will focus on a variety of topics: style in translation, corporate communications, writing skills, hard-to-translate words, voiceover translation, advertising, literary translation, word use frequency, and technical writing.
Translate in the Townships brings together some of the top translators in the industry today. Joining us this year are French-to-English instructors Chris Durban, a reputed financial translator from Paris, France; David Jemielity, the head of translation for Banque Cantonale Vaudoise in Lausanne, Switzerland; Ros Schwartz, an award-winning literary translator from the U.K.; and Grant Hamilton, winner of ATA’s 2009 Alicia Gordon Award for Word Artistry in Translation. Also attending on the English-to-French track are François Lavallée, founder of Magistrad and author of Le traducteur averti; Dominique Jonkers, a noted corporate and financial translator from Belgium; Rachel Martinez, winner of the Governor General’s Award for her translation of Glenn Gould’s biography; and Réal Paquette, a noted specialist in advertising adaptation.
Translate in the Townships is being held at Estrimont Suites & Spa in the resort town of Orford in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. Registration is C$495 (US$520) for participants who are members of an FIT-affiliated translation association, C$545 for members of ATAMESL, and C$595 (US$625) for all others. Registration includes all the sessions, three breakfasts, two lunches, and all coffee breaks. Hotel accommodation is not included, but the hotel is offering a special conference rate of $130 + tax for conference attendees.
